Introduction
I'm Harrison Clark, a Project Manager and Software Developer, and I've been with Evolve for 20 months, starting in April 2023.
I'm part of the Operations and Development Team, where I focus on driving the organisation's technical capabilities. My role involves implementing industry-led projects, such as Market-Wide Half-Hourly Settlement (MHHS), as well as contributing to Evolve's innovation projects and initiatives to help keep us ahead in a competitive landscape.
A Typical Day
A typical day for me starts with grabbing a coffee, cleaning up my inbox, and prioritising my outstanding tasks. My main responsibilities include attending MHHS programme steering groups and webinars to guide our internal plans and design decisions. I also write reports and SQL queries against our proprietary software databases to support other departments or respond to RFls from our regulators.
Maintaining strong relationships with TPIs is a key part of my role, particularly for the Smart Meter Installation project in preparation for MHHS. I collaborate with the development team to modify proprietary software and build solutions that automate manual tasks or enhance business processes. Most of my interactions with teams or clients happen via Teams or email, although I find face-to-face workshops incredibly valuable for project planning. My go-to tools include T-SQL, SQL Server, Azure DevOps, SSRS, and .NET.
Impacts & Achievements
The most rewarding part of my job is seeing completed projects and solutions come to life and the positive impact they have on stakeholders. I also enjoy the various 'aha moments that come with writing queries and scripts. One recent challenge I tackled involved creating a critical management information (MI) report for senior leadership, offering commercial insights into our portfolio. The task required pulling data from multiple databases, each with unique structures. To resolve this, I broke the process into smaller, manageable steps, validated data from each source separately, and combined it at the end - documenting each step ensured the process was clear, repeatable, and adaptable.
One of my proudest achievements has been integrating our systems with a third-party provider to support energy usage reporting. This project involved working closely with the provider to understand their system design and participating in biweekly workshops to align on data sharing. I designed an ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) solution in .NET to transform data from our proprietary software Into the provider's
required JSON specification. It was incredibly satisfying to see the integration successfully implemented and delivering results.
Looking Ahead
Looking ahead, my personal and professional goal is to continue developing my skills in designing and delivering scalable solutions.
I see my role evolving to place a stronger emphasis on leveraging data and technology to enhance operational efficiency through automation, helping the company grow and stay ahead in an
increasingly competitive market.
Closing Thoughts
My advice for anyone considering a career in the energy industry is to never be afraid to ask for help. Energy is a complex field, so it's completely normal if things don't make sense at first—it all comes together with time and curiosity.
My personal philosophy is that the best solutions come from asking the right questions, a mindset that guides me both professionally and personally.
